Work horses need to work (April 12, 2014: New York Daily News)

Belleville, Ill.: I would like to respond to Voicer Penny Siegel regarding carriage-horse drivers. First, I sympathize with you over the loss of your job. However, the conditions are in no way parallel. These drivers are losing their jobs due not to outsourcing or advanced technologies, but to mistaken understanding of animal needs and treatment, and to greed and political cronyism. I am an animal lover, concerned about the future of the horses. These horses are extremely healthy, well-cared for and beloved by their owners. They are regularly checked by veterinarians; they could not possibly do the work they do if this were not the case. Despite the false claims of misguided animal-rights groups, the horses were specifically bred to do this type of work, as drayage horses have done for many centuries. Wendy Wieland Martin
