Dear New York City Council Member:
On behalf of the Working Families Party, I write to express support for the NYC horse carriage industry and local 553 of the Teamsters Joint Council 16. We stand in solidarity with horse carriage workers who play a pivotal role in generating millions of dollars in revenue as one of the top three tourist attractions in the city.
The driver rate and animal welfare reforms implemented by the New York City Council in 2010 brought significant improvements to the lives of workers while formalizing best practices for working with horses. These horses are adored by their owners and drivers as evidenced by the high level of medical care and other benefits they receive – multiple breaks during the work day, and stables with more than adequate space complete with circulation fans and automatic waterers.
I urge you to consider a fair compromise that protects this iconic industry, preserves hundreds of middle-class jobs and ensures the dignity and respect of these horses that are an important part of the fabric of our city.
