Do the math (April 23, 2014: New York Daily News)

Boise, Idaho: Mayor de Blasio is an ignoramus when he says using horses to pull light carriages is cruel, while using horses for the mounted police is not (“Equine equivalence,” editorial, April 22). Neither is cruel. The carriage horses — big, robust animals bred for generations to do heavy work — pull less per pound than the lighter horses under the weight of a saddle and rider. Operating a carriage-horse business is neither cruel nor illegal, and should not be under threat in any way. Dana Quinney
