MANHATTAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OPPOSES MAYOR’S PROPOSAL TO BAN HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES

April 14, 2014

MCC’s Board of Directors voted to oppose the Mayor’s ban on horse drawn carriages.  Based on a poll of its members where 76% of the respondents are against the ban, the Board has taken a stand against the proposed ban.

“Our board met last week and discussed the proposed ban and reviewed the poll results and several of the comments,” states president Nancy Ploeger. “The comments against the ban ranged from ‘As long as the horses are humanely treated they should be allowed to work’ to ‘If they are going to ban horse drawn carriages, how about the mounted police? They are in even more dangerous situations than the horses pulling the carriages.’  A few of the comments even included this suggestion, ‘Reallocate the horse drawn carriages to drive on the bridle paths (currently not used) already in Central Park – and move the stables into the park at 81st police station. So let the horses live in the park and never have to be on the streets-keep the horse drawn carriages in NYC!’”
