Stables in Midtown Manhattan - 
Where the Horses Have Always Lived Upstairs

There are four carriage stables to house the famous carriage horses of New York City. The four stables are all privately owned by carriage families, or in the case of Clinton Park Stables on 52nd St., by a cooperative of carriage owners.

Each stable has its own character, but they all share certain general characteristics, most of which are required by the NYC Administrative Code and the Rules of the City of New York. 

The stables, located off of 11th Avenue at 52nd, 48th, 38th and 37th Streets, are located in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, and they were all orginally built as horse stables in the late 19th century. All of the stables house the horses on the second and third floors of the building, which are accessed by walking up ramps designed for this purpose.

All NYC carriage stables are regulated and inspected by the Department of Health at least four times per year. The DOH and NYPD Mounted Unit have 24-hour access to all of our stables and make routine visits monthly or more frequently if they are investigating a call. 

All stalls in the stables must be at least 60 square feet, and there are no standing straight (or tie) stalls. Every stall is configured in such a way that the horses can all turn around and lie down safely and comfortably.  Each stall is properly bedded either with wood shavings or straw bedding and has rubber mats that are 3/4 of an inch thick beneath the bedding, so that the horses have a comfortable bed to lie on.

All stables provide 24-hour stablemen so that the horses are never left unattended. Each stable has a proper emergency evacuation drill in place in the event of an emergency, and all carriage stables are required by law to have full sprinkler systems. the New York Fire Department inspects each building annually.

Stables all have excellent ventilation and a lot of windows to provide natural light. Commercial oscillating fans are a prominent fixture for summertime to keep the stables cool and one stable has misters on the fans to cool the stable further on extremely hot days.
