Keep the carriage horses in midtown (August 25, 2015: Staten Island Advance)
By Curtis J. Livingston, III
Philadelphia
In response to Mrs. Barizone’s letter (“Get carriage horses off city streets,” Aug. 19), I have to apologize to her, but I support the carriages in NYC.
As a tourist, I’ve met and seen the equines up close and they are not harmed or abused.
She claims that “horses have feelings. Well, guess who else? The humans who work with the horses each day. If the horses are taken away, the humans’ and the horses’ “feelings” will get hurt in a New York Minute.
The city is safe for equines. Why would Ms. Barizone be siding with real estate moguls who want the equines gone to build more towers than that Island could hold. If Ms. Barizone loves horses, she should help the equines in places like Arizona, where the equines aren’t as lucky as the ones in NYC.
By the way, the carriage equines in NYC have a five-week vacation before they get back to work in midtown. Better than our vacation days, in my honest opinion.
As a soon-to-be resident, an animal-loving amateur cartoonist and a history buff, I want the carriages to stay in midtown Manhattan.
Sorry, Ms. Barizone. I support the carriages.
