Sterile city (January 26, 2016: New York Daily News)

Innisfil, Ontario: When I have visited NYC, one of the highlights for me is what the timeless horse-drawn carriages add to the ambience of the street scenery, as well as the reconnection to the sounds, smells and feel of traveling in a vehicle not run by an engine. If this latest assault on the horse-carriage industry by Mayor de Blasio manages to be approved, the great city will have become an icon for killing off yet another segment of the natural world to set itself apart as a sterile, unattached place with no connections to the countryside. Perhaps that is considered an ideal goal by some. I will find it a sad statement, one that puts political agenda and backdoor agreements ahead of people and beauty. Lisa Peterson
