I’m an Irish immigrant living and working in the United States since the mid-’80s.

I arrived on these shores at the tender age of 21 and, like many before me, marveled at the great New York City.

I spent some years working in the carriage industry, which, for a young man brought up on a small western Ireland farm, turned out to be a good fit.

I started in the carriages when Ed Koch was mayor and had left them before Michael Bloomberg took office.

Today I look at New York, and I’m horrified at what the current administration is trying to do to these people.

In the almost 30 years of seeing the ups and downs of the industry, I thought I had seen it all – but this latest City Council bill brings New York politics to a new low.
