Land of the horse (May 22, 2014: New York Daily News)

Huntington, L.I.: The horse built America. Voicers who compare the treatment of carriage horses to the boy who kicked the cat are confused. Animal cruelty is when someone hurts an animal or does not care for it responsibly. It is against the law to be cruel to or harm animals, even your own pets. You cannot compare the treatment of carriage horses to the boy who deliberately lured a cat with food, pet it to make sure that it stayed, then deliberately kicked it. The carriage horses get food, water, a place to sleep, veterinary care, foot care and five weeks’ vacation. The horses on the race track, the trail horses at most barns, the lesson horses or personally owned horses do not get vacation. I’d pull a wagon in the city to get five weeks’ vacation! Kym Tinsley
