Unhealthy debate (June 15, 2014: New York Daily News)

Minneapolis: As an avid horsewoman with an education in exercise science and kinesiology, it pains me to see such egregious claims as “walking on cement causes arthritis,” as Voicer Beverly Rolfsmeyer stated. Even unworked, pastured horses can exhibit signs of joint pain. Human and equine studies alike have shown, however, that mild concussive forces can serve to strengthen joints and build bone density — in humans, improving the symptoms of arthritis up to 47%. For both humans and horses, walking is one of the best exercises for overall health and fitness, and there’s exactly zero evidence to suggest otherwise. Let’s keep this debate based in fact, please. Lisa Kapsner
