Park walks or slaughterhouses (July 18, 2014: New York Daily News)

Westfield, N.J.: So Bill Maher dreams of the horses from Central Park “running joyfully in a pasture” (“This cruelty is no laugh,” column, July 17). Horses are working animals, providing jobs as well as enjoyment for people who like a slow ride through Central Park. Perhaps the next time Maher has a steak dinner, he should ponder how wonderful it would have been for the cow to graze the open range, updating its Facebook page and taking selfies with its friends. Maher lives in a fantasy world and makes a living saying stupid things. Tom Lienhard
