Live and let live (December 11, 2014: New York Daily News)

Staten Island: As a volunteer for a puppy mill rescue group and a former horse owner, I am against the ban of horse-drawn carriages. These horses are very well cared for and happy doing what they were bred to do. Having owned horses in the past, and now being involved with dog rescue work, I know first-hand what an abused and neglected animal looks like, and these horses do not fall into those categories by any means. They receive proper vet care, as well as hoof and mouth care (they are properly shod and their teeth are floated, so they can chew properly). They work to provide their owners/drivers a decent standard of living for their families, and they in turn care for the horses properly — all while providing a memorable experience for the tourist and city dweller alike. Ruth Guido
