How horses make heat (March 2, 2015: New York Daily News)

Odessa, Fla.: What non-horse people don’t understand is that horses have a digestive organ called the cecum that digests fiber (hay) through fermentation. That is, they have an internal furnace as long as they have enough hay. They also have twice as many hair follicles per square inch as do humans. Bottom line: Horses are very efficient in cold weather as long as they have good hay and a thick coat. Andrea Whiting
